The entrance or lobby area of a church building. A person enters the narthex from outside, and then proceeds into the worship space, which include the nave and chancel/sanctuary. The word derives, via Latin, from the Greek noun for “scourge”. The entrance of the church building was considered to be a place for penitents, for “scourging” oneself in penitence.
